The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu

The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu, will be released on September 1. It is the second instalment of the Eldest Curses, a companion series to The Mortal Instruments. Set two years after the events of City of Heavenly Fire, it follows Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood on their personal journeys of love, family and adventure.

I really enjoyed this novel as it focuses on a couple who were supporting characters of the original series, The Mortal Instruments. There are moments of happiness, laughter and sadness spread throughout the entire book, which made it such a fun and exciting read. The writing style is similar to Clare’s original writing in The Mortal Instruments, but her growth as a writer is evident through the characters’ development in this second novel. The novel isn’t written in different parts, so there aren’t distinct parts which were written by the respective authors. However, you can see how Wesley Chu’s input on this novel enhanced and built upon Clare’s writing, which is noticeable from her other works.

Overall, I really loved the carefree reading style of this book, and how you followed Magnus and Alec’s own journey alongside the other characters and couples from The Mortal Instruments. I rate The Lost Book of the White a 4 out of 5 stars, as I would definitely read it again but it isn’t one of my favourite books of all time.
